Confession of Sin [+][-]

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 82 Deus stetit

Defend the poor and fatherless; see that such as are in need and necessity have right.

  GOD standeth in the congregation of princes; *
      he is a Judge among gods.
   How long will ye give wrong judgment, *
      and accept the persons of the ungodly?
   Defend the poor and fatherless; *
      see that such as are in need and necessity have right.
   Deliver the outcast and poor; *
      save them from the hand of the ungodly.
   They know not, neither do they understand, but walk on still in darkness: *
      all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
   I have said, Ye are gods, *
      and ye are all the children of the Most Highest.
   But ye shall die like men, *
      and fall like one of the princes.
   Arise, O God, and judge thou the earth; *
      for thou shalt take all nations to thine inheritance.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Defend the poor and fatherless; see that such as are in need and necessity have right.

Psalm 83 Deus, quis similis?

They shall know that thou art only the most Highest over all the earth.

  HOLD not thy tongue, O God, keep not still silence: *
      refrain not thyself, O God.
   For lo, thine enemies make a murmuring; *
      and they that hate thee have lift up their head.
   They have imagined craftily against thy people, *
      and taken counsel against thy secret ones.
   They have said, Come, and let us root them out, that they be no more a people, *
      and that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
   For they have cast their heads together with one consent, *
      and are confederate against thee:
   The tabernacles of the Edomites, and the Ishmaelites; *
      the Moabites, and Hagarenes;
   Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; *
      the Philistines, with them that dwell at Tyre.
   Assyria also is joined with them; *
      they have holpen the children of Lot.
   But do thou to them as unto the Midianites; *
      unto Sisera, and unto Jabin at the brook of Kishon;
10    Who perished at Endor, *
      and became as the dung of the earth.
11    Make them and their princes like Oreb and Zeeb; *
      yea, make all their princes like as Zebah and Zalmunna;
12    Who say, Let us take to ourselves *
      the houses of God in possession.
13    O my God, make them like unto the whirling dust, *
      and as the stubble before the wind;
14    Like as the fire that burneth up the forest, *
      and as the flame that consumeth the mountains;
15    Pursue them even so with thy tempest, *
      and make them afraid with thy storm.
16    Make their faces ashamed, O LORD, *
      that they may seek thy Name.
17    Let them be confounded and vexed ever more and more; *
      let them be put to shame, and perish.
18    And they shall know that thou, whose Name is JEHOVAH, *
      art only the Most Highest over all the earth.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

They shall know that thou art only the most Highest over all the earth.

Psalm 84 Quam dilecta!

O LORD God of hosts hear my prayer :hearken O God of Jacob

  O HOW amiable are thy dwellings, *
      thou LORD of hosts!
   My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the LORD; *
      my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
   Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest, where she may lay her young; *
      even thy altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.
   Blessed are they that dwell in thy house; *
      they will be alway praising thee.
   Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; *
      in whose heart are thy ways.
   Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well; *
      and the pools are filled with water.
   They will go from strength to strength, *
      and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.
   O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; *
      hearken, O God of Jacob.
   Behold, O God our defender, *
      and look upon the face of thine anointed.
10    For one day in thy courts *
      is better than a thousand.
11    I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God, *
      than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness.
12    For the LORD God is a light and defence; *
      the LORD will give grace and worship; and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life.
13    O LORD God of hosts, *
      blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O LORD God of hosts hear my prayer :hearken O God of Jacob

Psalm 85 Benedixisti, Domine

Turn us then, O God our Saviour, and let thine anger cease from us.

  LORD, thou art become gracious unto thy land; *
      thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.
   Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people, *
      and covered all their sins.
   Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure, *
      and turned thyself from thy wrathful indignation.
   Turn us then, O God our Saviour, *
      and let thine anger cease from us.
   Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever? *
      and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another?
   Wilt thou not turn again, and quicken us, *
      that thy people may rejoice in thee?
   Show us thy mercy, O LORD, *
      and grant us thy salvation.
   I will hearken what the LORD God will say; *
      for he shall speak peace unto his people, and to his saints, that they turn not again unto foolishness.
   For his salvation is nigh them that fear him; *
      that glory may dwell in our land.
10    Mercy and truth are met together: *
      righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11    Truth shall flourish out of the earth, *
      and righteousness hath looked down from heaven.
12    Yea, the LORD shall show loving-kindness; *
      and our land shall give her increase.
13    Righteousness shall go before him, *
      and shall direct his going in the way.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Turn us then, O God our Saviour, and let thine anger cease from us.

Psalm 82 Deus stetit

Save the weak and the orphan; defend the humble and needy;

  God takes his stand in the council of heaven; *
      he gives judgment in the midst of the gods:
  How long will you judge unjustly, *
      and show favor to the wicked?
  Save the weak and the orphan; *
      defend the humble and needy;
  Rescue the weak and the poor; *
      deliver them from the power of the wicked.
  They do not know, neither do they understand; they go about in darkness; *
      all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
  Now I say to you, 'You are gods, *
      and all of you children of the Most High;
  Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, *
      and fall like any prince.'"
  Arise, O God, and rule the earth, *
      for you shall take all nations for your own.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:*
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Save the weak and the orphan; defend the humble and needy;

Psalm 83 Deus, quis similis?

Let them know that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

  O God, do not be silent; *
      do not keep still nor hold your peace, O God;
  For your enemies are in tumult, *
      and those who hate you have lifted up their heads.
  They take secret counsel against your people *
      and plot against those whom you protect.
  They have said, "Come, let us wipe them out from among the nations; *
      let the name of Israel be remembered no more."
  They have conspired together; *
      they have made an alliance against you:
  The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; *
      the Moabites and the Hagarenes;
  Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; *
      the Philistines and those who dwell in Tyre.
  The Assyrians also have joined them, *
      and have come to help the people of Lot.
  Do to them as you did to Midian, *
      to Sisera, and to Jabin at the river of Kishon:
10   They were destroyed at Endor; *
      they became like dung upon the ground.
11   Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeëb, *
      and all their commanders like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12   Who said, "Let us take for ourselves *
      the fields of God as our possession."
13   O my God, make them like whirling dust *
      and like chaff before the wind;
14   Like fire that burns down a forest, *
      like the flame that sets mountains ablaze.
15   Drive them with your tempest *
      and terrify them with your storm;
16   Cover their faces with shame, O LORD, *
      that they may seek your Name.
17   Let them be disgraced and terrified for ever; *
      let them be put to confusion and perish.
18   Let them know that you, whose Name is YAHWEH, *
      you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Amen.

Let them know that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 84 Quam dilecta!

LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; hearken, O God of Jacob.

  How dear to me is your dwelling, O LORD of hosts! *
      My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
  The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; *
      by the side of your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.
  Happy are they who dwell in your house! *
      they will always be praising you.
  Happy are the people whose strength is in you! *
      whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way.
  Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, *
      for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
  They will climb from height to height, *
      and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.
  LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; *
      hearken, O God of Jacob.
  Behold our defender, O God; *
      and look upon the face of your Anointed.
  For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, *
      and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.
10   For the LORD God is both sun and shield; *
      he will give grace and glory;
11   No good thing will the LORD withhold *
      from those who walk with integrity.
12   O LORD of hosts, *
      happy are they who put their trust in you!

Amen.

LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; hearken, O God of Jacob.

Psalm 85 Benedixisti, Domine

Restore us then, O God our Savior; let your anger depart from us.

  You have been gracious to your land, O LORD, *
      you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.
  You have forgiven the iniquity of your people *
      and blotted out all their sins.
  You have withdrawn all your fury *
      and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation.
  Restore us then, O God our Savior; *
      let your anger depart from us.
  Will you be displeased with us for ever? *
      will you prolong your anger from age to age?
  Will you not give us life again, *
      that your people may rejoice in you?
  Show us your mercy, O LORD, *
      and grant us your salvation.
  I will listen to what the LORD God is saying, *
      for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him.
  Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, *
      that his glory may dwell in our land.
10   Mercy and truth have met together; *
      righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11   Truth shall spring up from the earth, *
      and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12   The LORD will indeed grant prosperity, *
      and our land will yield its increase.
13   Righteousness shall go before him, *
      and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Amen.

Restore us then, O God our Savior; let your anger depart from us.

Psalm 36 Dixit injustus

For with thee is the well of life and in thy light shall we see light.

  MY heart showeth me the wickedness of the ungodly, *
      that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
   For he flattereth himself in his own sight, *
      until his abominable sin be found out.
   The words of his mouth are unrighteous and full of deceit: *
      he hath left off to behave himself wisely, and to do good.
   He imagineth mischief upon his bed, and hath set himself in no good way; *
      neither doth he abhor any thing that is evil.
   Thy mercy, O LORD, reacheth unto the heavens, *
      and thy faithfulness unto the clouds.
   Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains: *
      thy judgments are like the great deep.
   Thou, LORD, shalt save both man and beast: how excellent is thy mercy, O God! *
      and the children of men shall put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
   They shall be satisfied with the plenteousness of thy house; *
      and thou shalt give them drink of thy pleasures, as out of the river.
   For with thee is the well of life; *
      and in thy light shall we see light.
10    O continue forth thy loving-kindness unto them that know thee, *
      and thy righteousness unto them that are true of heart.
11    O let not the foot of pride come against me; *
      and let not the hand of the ungodly cast me down.
12    There are they fallen, all that work wickedness; *
      they are cast down, and shall not be able to stand.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

For with thee is the well of life and in thy light shall we see light.

Psalm 39 Dixi, Custodiam

Deliver me from all mine offences and make me not a rebuke unto the foolish.

  I SAID, I will take heed to my ways, *
      that I offend not in my tongue.
   I will keep my mouth as it were with a bridle, *
      while the ungodly is in my sight.
   I held my tongue, and spake nothing: *
      I kept silence, yea, even from good words; but it was pain and grief to me.
   My heart was hot within me: and while I was thus musing the fire kindled, *
      and at the last I spake with my tongue:
   LORD, let me know mine end, and the number of my days; *
      that I may be certified how long I have to live.
   Behold, thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; *
      and verily every man living is altogether vanity.
   For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; *
      he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.
   And now, Lord, what is my hope? *
      truly my hope is even in thee.
   Deliver me from all mine offences; *
      and make me not a rebuke unto the foolish.
10    I became dumb, and opened not my mouth; *
      for it was thy doing.
11    Take thy plague away from me: *
      I am even consumed by the means of thy heavy hand.
12    When thou with rebukes dost chasten man for sin, thou makest his beauty to consume away, like as it were a moth fretting a garment: *
      every man therefore is but vanity.
13    Hear my prayer, O LORD, and with thine ears consider my calling; *
      hold not thy peace at my tears;
14    For I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, *
      as all my fathers were.
15    O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, *
      before I go hence, and be no more seen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Deliver me from all mine offences and make me not a rebuke unto the foolish.

Psalm 36 Dixit injustus

For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light.

  There is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart of the wicked; *
      there is no fear of God before his eyes.
  He flatters himself in his own eyes *
      that his hateful sin will not be found out.
  The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; *
      he has left off acting wisely and doing good.
  He thinks up wickedness upon his bed and has set himself in no good way; *
      he does not abhor that which is evil.
  Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, *
      and your faithfulness to the clouds.
  Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; *
      you save both man and beast, O LORD.
  How priceless is your love, O God! *
      your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
  They feast upon the abundance of your house; *
      you give them drink from the river of your delights.
  For with you is the well of life, *
      and in your light we see light.
10   Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, *
      and your favor to those who are true of heart.
11   Let not the foot of the proud come near me, *
      nor the hand of the wicked push me aside.
12   See how they are fallen, those who work wickedness! *
      they are cast down and shall not be able to rise.

Amen.

For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light.

Psalm 39 Dixi, Custodiam

Deliver me from all my transgressions and do not make me the taunt of the fool.

  I said, "I will keep watch upon my ways, *
      so that I do not offend with my tongue.
  I will put a muzzle on my mouth *
      while the wicked are in my presence."
  So I held my tongue and said nothing; *
      I refrained from rash words; but my pain became unbearable.
  My heart was hot within me; while I pondered, the fire burst into flame; *
      I spoke out with my tongue:
  LORD, let me know my end and the number of my days, *
      so that I may know how short my life is.
  You have given me a mere handful of days, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight; *
      truly, even those who stand erect are but a puff of wind.
  We walk about like a shadow, and in vain we are in turmoil; *
      we heap up riches and cannot tell who will gather them.
  And now, what is my hope? *
      O Lord, my hope is in you.
  Deliver me from all my transgressions *
      and do not make me the taunt of the fool.
10   I fell silent and did not open my mouth, *
      for surely it was you that did it.
11   Take your affliction from me; *
      I am worn down by the blows of your hand.
12   With rebukes for sin you punish us; like a moth you eat away all that is dear to us; *
      truly, everyone is but a puff of wind.
13   Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; *
      hold not your peace at my tears.
14   For I am but a sojourner with you, *
      a wayfarer, as all my forebears were.
15   Turn your gaze from me, that I may be glad again, *
      before I go my way and am no more.

Amen.

Deliver me from all my transgressions and do not make me the taunt of the fool.

The Lessons

A Reading from 1 Samuel 19:1-18

And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself: And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause? And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the LORD liveth, he shall not be slain. And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past. And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him. And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand. And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin: but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night. Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain. So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped. And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick. And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him. And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster. And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee? So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, "Saul my father seeks to kill you; therefore take heed to yourself in the morning, stay in a secret place and hide yourself; and I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you; and if I learn anything I will tell you." And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, "Let not the king sin against his servant David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have been of good service to you; for he took his life in his hand and he slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced; why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?" And Saul hearkened to the voice of Jonathan; Saul swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death." And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. And there was war again; and David went out and fought with the Philistines, and made a great slaughter among them, so that they fled before him. Then an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing the lyre. And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear; but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled, and escaped. That night Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, "If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed." So Michal let David down through the window; and he fled away and escaped. Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head, and covered it with the clothes. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, "He is sick." Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him." And when the messengers came in, behold, the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me thus, and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?" And Michal answered Saul, "He said to me, `Let me go; why should I kill you?'" Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt at Nai'oth.

Saul spoke with his son Jonathan and with all his servants about killing David. But Saul's son Jonathan took great delight in David. Jonathan told David, "My father Saul is trying to kill you; therefore be on guard tomorrow morning; stay in a secret place and hide yourself. I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you; if I learn anything I will tell you." Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul, saying to him, "The king should not sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have been of good service to you; for he took his life in his hand when he attacked the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced; why then will you sin against an innocent person by killing David without cause?" Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan; Saul swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death." So Jonathan called David and related all these things to him. Jonathan then brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. Again there was war, and David went out to fight the Philistines. He launched a heavy attack on them, so that they fled before him. Then an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, while David was playing music. Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear; but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. David fled and escaped that night. Saul sent messengers to David's house to keep watch over him, planning to kill him in the morning. David's wife Michal told him, "If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed." So Michal let David down through the window; he fled away and escaped. Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed; she put a net of goats' hair on its head, and covered it with the clothes. When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, "He is sick." Then Saul sent the messengers to see David for themselves. He said, "Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him." When the messengers came in, the idol was in the bed, with the covering of goats' hair on its head. Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me like this, and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?" Michal answered Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go; why should I kill you?'" Now David fled and escaped; he came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and settled at Naioth.

The Second Song of Isaiah Quaerite Dominum
Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found; *
call ye upon him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way *
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to the Lord
and he will have mercy upon him; *
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, *
neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, *
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven *
and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth,
And maketh it bring forth and bud, *
so that it may give seed to the sower,
and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth; *
it shall not return unto me void;
But it shall accomplish that which I please, *
and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways *
and the evil ones their thoughts;
And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, *
and to our God, for he will richly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, *
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, *
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from the heavens *
and return not again, but water the earth,
Bringing forth life and giving growth, *
seed for sowing and bread for eating,
So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *
it will not return to me empty;
But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *
and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:*
     As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *

He hath showed strength with his arm; *
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, *

A Reading from Matthew 25:14-30

For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' |For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

"For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Hymn: Splendor Paterne Glorie

Meter: LM 82H: 5

O splendor of God's glory bright,
O Thou that bringest light from light;
O Light of light, light's living spring,
O day, all days illumining.

O Thou true Sun, on us Thy glance
Let fall in royal radiance;
The Spirit's sanctifying beam
Upon our earthly senses stream.

The Father, too, our prayers implore,
Father of glory evermore;
The Father of all grace and might,
To banish sin from our delight.

To guide whate'er we nobly do,
With love all envy to subdue;
To make ill fortune turn to fair,
And give us grace our wrongs to bear.

Our mind be in His keeping placed
Our body true to Him and chaste,
Where only faith her fire shall feed,
To burn the tares of Satan's seed.

And Christ to us for food shall be,
From Him our drink that welleth free,
The Spirit's wine, that maketh whole,
And, mocking not, exalts the soul.

Rejoicing may this day go hence;
Like virgin dawn our innocence,
Like fiery noon our faith appear,
Nor known the gloom of twilight drear.

Morn in her rosy car is borne;
Let Him come forth our perfect morn,
The Word in God the Father one,
The Father perfect in the Son.

All laud to God the Father be;
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

V. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth.
R. In thy sight as incense.

The Spirit's sanctifying beam
Upon our earthly senses stream.

The Father, too, our prayers implore,
Father of glory evermore;
The Father of all grace and might,
To banish sin from our delight.

To guide whate'er we nobly do,
With love all envy to subdue;
To make ill fortune turn to fair,
And give us grace our wrongs to bear.

Our mind be in His keeping placed
Our body true to Him and chaste,
Where only faith her fire shall feed,
To burn the tares of Satan's seed.

And Christ to us for food shall be,
From Him our drink that welleth free,
The Spirit's wine, that maketh whole,
And, mocking not, exalts the soul.

Rejoicing may this day go hence;
Like virgin dawn our innocence,
Like fiery noon our faith appear,
Nor known the gloom of twilight drear.

Morn in her rosy car is borne;
Let Him come forth our perfect morn,
The Word in God the Father one,
The Father perfect in the Son.

All laud to God the Father be;
All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.

V. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth.
R. In your sight as incense.

Authorized intercessions and thanksgivings may follow.

For All Sorts and Conditions [A form of general intercession] [+][-]

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving [+][-]

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom [+][-]

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

Salve Regina

Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this
valley of tears.Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of
mercy toward us. And after this our exile show unto us
the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement
O loving
O sweet Virgin Mary

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R.That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Almighty, everlasting God, who by the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a worthy dwelling for Thy Son; grant that we who rejoice in her commemoration may, by her loving intercession, be delivered from present evils and from the everlasting death. Amen.

V. May the divine help remain with us always.
R. And with our absent brothers and sisters. Amen.

Salve Regina

Mary, we hail you, Mother and Queen compassionate;
Mary, most humble, great and pure, we hail you.
To you we exiles, children of Eve lift our voices.
To you we sing praises, because by the Spirit, you brought
forth to us the Savior.
Turn now, therefore, O our intercessor, your eyes of pity and lovingkindness upon us sinners.
Then at the last, when our earthly journey has been ended, show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb.
O gentle
O tender
O gracious Virgin Mary

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R.That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Almighty and everlasting God, who by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, prepared the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mary to become a habitation for your Son: Grant that, as we rejoice in her obedience, we may have the support of her loving intercession, and may be delivered from our present evils and eternal death; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
